Glass in hand, off we went to Weingut Schnaitmann but not before a brief stop in the vineyards of Fellbach in W\u00fcrtemberg to take in the views and learn about the challenges of the 2021 growing season. Rainer took us through a selection of their Sp\u00e4tburgunder (or Pinot Noir), Lemberger and Riesling over lunch. We had an \u201cextremely local\u201d dish made by his mum: spaghetti carbonara \u2013 although Rainer was hoping for something slightly different as our first taste of Germany, I think we all know it\u2019s best not to argue!\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW78005759 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW47117290 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW47117290 BCX0\">Next up, Patrick from Weingut Johner came all the way from Baden to take us through a tasting from Karl H. Johner as well as their new Johner Estate that\u2019s based in New Zealand. We had a quick tour of the famous Hundsr\u00fcck vineyard followed by dinner with a backdrop of, you guessed it, more vineyards. The next morning kicked off at 8:30am with Sebastian taking us through a tasting of ten wines in their new purpose-built tasting room \u2013 certainly a punchy start to the day! There was an excellent selection of both <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW130825717 BCX0\">Sp\u00e4tburgunder and Chardonnay, both of which I\u2019m particularly fond of. It\u2019s a beautiful Italian-style villa and estate that can be found in Wachenheim in the Pfalz region. Parts of the estate have been certified organic as of the 2022 vintage but the philosophy for many years now has been to farm without artificial fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides and by hand to ensure quality. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.oxfordwine.co.uk\/products\/villa-wolf-rose-pfalz\">Pinot Noir Ros\u00e9<\/a><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW246956822 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246956822 BCX0\">\u00a0has always been one of my favourites<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246956822 BCX0\">,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246956822 BCX0\">and<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW246956822 BCX0\"> I also enjoyed the Forster Pechstein Riesling that was delightfully precise and had a splash of spicy minerality.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW246956822 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Then it was onto Weingut Dr Loosen itself in the Mosel. Not only were we taken through a tasting by the famous and charismatic Erni Loosen himself, but we were also treated to dinner, challenged to a blind tasting and invited to stay at the new Dr Loosen guesthouse. Blind wines included a white field blend from California, a Petite Arvine from Switzerland and some wines from Erni\u2019s personal cellar from various older vintages: 1971, 1964, 1959 and even 1945! It was inspirational learning how the region <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103478259 BCX0\">is getting <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103478259 BCX0\">back on <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103478259 BCX0\">its<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103478259 BCX0\"> feet after the devasting flood in 2021 that <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103478259 BCX0\">significantly <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103478259 BCX0\">damaged the Ahr Valley. Alexander\u2019s Flutedition<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103478259 BCX0\"> (or flood edition)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103478259 BCX0\"> wines are made from barrels that were very much salvaged from the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103478259 BCX0\">aftermath of the flooding<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103478259 BCX0\">. Without knowing what was in each barrel, they were individually tasted and split into three quality groups that make up the 2020 offering \u2013 even the wonky \u2018n\u2019 on th<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103478259 BCX0\">is vintage\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103478259 BCX0\">label is because that\u2019s how their sign was found. Not only did we have a glass of it at a famous viewpoint overlooking the whole region, but it was also paired with chocolate ice cream! A<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW149313058 BCX0\">t the winery, we had<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW149313058 BCX0\"> extensive tasting of 13 wines<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW149313058 BCX0\"> (all of which were Riesling!) <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW149313058 BCX0\">followed by <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW149313058 BCX0\">Cornelius\u2019<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW149313058 BCX0\"> lockdown beer project that was a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW149313058 BCX0\"> fun contrast and also a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW149313058 BCX0\"> great <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW149313058 BCX0\">balance<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW149313058 BCX0\"> of hoppy and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW149313058 BCX0\">fruity. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW149313058 BCX0\">The lovely Anne then hosted us for dinner at a local restaurant that included an absolutely delicious Kalbsr\u00fccken auf Rahmwirsing Pfifferlinge und hausgemachte Sp\u00e4tzle aka veal (and, yes, that took too long to copy).
