He had recently been to a talk on synaesthesia and wanted to try and replicate some semblance of this blending of senses to those of us who don\u2019t experience it.<\/p>\n<p>As a prize-winning Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and a recipient of the Silver Medal of the Musicians\u2019 Company, Michael was more than capable of covering the music and listening part of the event and was hoping to pair each piece of organ music with a wine that would evoke the right feeling and sensation for the smell and taste elements of the evening. And thus began several anything-but-arduous iterations of listening to organ music on YouTube and going to wine tastings with Michael!<\/p>\n<p>With Exeter College Chapel as our impressive backdrop for the sight element, we\u2019ve been lucky enough to have just held our third iteration of the event. I\u2019m pleased to say that the feedback on the pairings has been the most positive so far and, without further ado, here\u2019s what we did\u2026<\/p>\n<p>It wouldn\u2019t be a wine tasting without any bubbly, so we kicked the evening of with a <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.oxfordwine.co.uk\/products\/ernest-rapeneau-blanc-de-blancs-champagne\"><strong>Blanc de Blancs from Ernest Rapeneau<\/strong><\/a>. Unlike other events I\u2019ve done, these bottles were opened in time to Johann Sebastian Bach\u2019s Toccata and Fugue in D minor \u2013 always a tricky feat but it makes for a dramatic start and sets the tone for a fun evening! We heard that the rich and toasty characteristics from the Blanc de Blancs were a good contrast to the playfulness of the piece.<\/p>\n<p>Our first white of the evening was a Sauvignon Blanc. We went with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.oxfordwine.co.uk\/products\/domaine-jean-max-roger-sancerre-blanc-le-clocher-damelie\">Jean-Max Roger\u2019s Le Clocher d\u2019Amelie Sancerre<\/a><\/strong> and this was paired with Th\u00e9odore Dubois\u2019 Marcietta. With both wine and composer hailing from France, we thought in this case that the light, zippy acidity of the wine worked well with the light melodic tone of its musical pairing. Next up was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.oxfordwine.co.uk\/products\/donnhoff-oberhauser-leistenberg-riesling-kabinett\">D\u00f6nnhoff\u2019s Oberh\u00e4user Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett<\/a><\/strong> from Germany that was accompanied by compatriot Franz Xaver Schnizer\u2019s Sonata in D major. Similarly light, a touch off-dry and quite lively, it helped to underscore the \u201cuncomplicated and pleasing style of music\u201d of Schnizer\u2019s time where the focus was on \u201cshowing off the organist\u2019s virtuosity without overpowering the listeners\u2019 ears\u201d (Michael\u2019s words, not mine!).<\/p>\n<p>We then moved onto the red wines and started with a fresh and fruity but subtly complex <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.oxfordwine.co.uk\/products\/anton-bauer-wagram-pinot-noir-austria\">Pinot Noir from Anton Bauer<\/a><\/strong>. The Pinot Noir was paired with Gordon Young\u2019s Prelude in Classic Style which Michael, in previous conversations, described as a \u201cwell-rounded and slightly spicy organ piece\u201d \u2013 a perfect match indeed. Moving back to France again for both wine and music, a Bordeaux blend from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.oxfordwine.co.uk\/products\/chateau-malmaison-moulis\">Ch\u00e2teau Malmaison<\/a><\/strong> was coupled with Jules Massenet\u2019s M\u00e9ditation from the opera Tha\u00efs. We thought the serious, intense and dense wine was an ideal match for the beautiful and contemplative opera excerpt where, fittingly, the character is \u201ccaptured between shallow pleasures readily available to her and the pursuit of a deeper meaning of life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>To conclude the tasting, we had my absolute favourite pairing of the evening: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.oxfordwine.co.uk\/products\/oliver-zeters-goldschatz-trockenbeerenauslese-pfalz\">Oliver Zeter\u2019s Goldschatz Trockenbeerenauslese<\/a><\/strong> with Charles Marie Widor\u2019s Toccata from Symphony No. 5. It takes a specific series of circumstances and a certain kind of magic to make a noble rot dessert wine where all the concentrated fruit flavours and lively sweetness and acidity just dance around on your palate \u2013 and I think it just works exceptionally well with the powerful, bold and impressive Toccata that is pretty magical in itself.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, a superb evening thanks to Michael\u2019s outstanding command of the organ, and honestly the highlight of my tasting calendar.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row A stint spent at Ch\u00e2teau M\u00e9aume in Bordeaux gave her some practical experience before she returned to England and joined The Oxford Wine Company as a Shop Manager.
