A Taste of South Africa with The Old Road Wine Co.

Old Road Wine Co. Tasting

We were delighted to welcome Pippa Carter of The Old Road Wine Co to our tasting room last night. We tasted six wines from Franschhoek and Elgin, each with a very different personality.

Our tasting kicked off with Le Courier Chenin Blanc – a gorgeously vibrant wine whose freshness, fruit and value for money wowed the room.

The next wine was Juliette Sauvignon Blanc, which we all agreed would make a great aperitif in the current sunny weather!

Our final white was something really special, the Grand Mère Semillon. This wine is made from 80-year old vines, which contribute to its incredible concentration and complexity. It was already five years old and starting to develop some delicious aged characteristics, and many of us thought it still had a long life ahead of it, and was one to hide away in the cellar.

The first red was an ethereally light Pinot Noir, which gained its fragrant aromatics from the cool climate of Elgin.

We moved on to the rich and punchy Fat Man Pinotage. This wine has bags of generous ripe fruit and really satisfied those who like a wine with a full body. We even think we might have changed the mind of a few Pinotage-sceptics!

Our last wine of the night was the Spotted Hound red blend. This is an eclectic mix which changes every year. The current vintage is based on Mourvedre, which contributes an earthy, meaty quality alongside dark hedgerow fruit flavours.

Thank you so much to Pippa and all our attendees for a wonderful evening of wine!
