It’s very easy to see the addition of peat the whisky making process as something fundamentally one dimensional, but there’s so much more to peated whisky than a first glance lets on. From distillery tours claiming saltiness is the result of casks being aged by the sea, to whisky experts debating the differences between Highland and West Coast peat, there’s a lot to unpack and breakdown.
First and foremost however, there’s delicious whisky to sample and, in this tasting, we’ll explore seven distillery bottled releases to analyse and interpret these differences for ourselves.
