Producer Profile: Benevolent Neglect

Benevolent Neglect is a new winery located in Lake Country in Napa, California. The owners are Matt Nagy and Ben Brenner who both have a history and excellent reputation in the winemaking world. Matt previously worked for Maybach Cellars, a famous and highly regarded wine making family who have been producing premium wines for generations. During his time with Maybach, Matt produced some of California’s highest scoring wines. Ben has also had an equally impressive career including time with Rutherford Wine Co, a family estate who have pioneered sustainable farming and winemaking in Napa Valley.

Benevolent Neglect

Ben and Matt have now joined forces to create Benevolent Neglect, BN Wines. With their knowledge and expertise, it is safe to expect quality wines made with sensitivity and finesse. As their name implies their winemaking style is low intervention with minimal sulphates and no fining or filtration. They only work with fruit sourced from local vineyards of the highest quality, meaning they are usually working with low yields and therefore produce a limited number of bottles.

The desire of BN is to craft wines that have a personality which is unique to their environment, captures the journey the fruit has been on and deliver that sense of place and time – terroir. From their wines we expect great fruit, medium acidity, full texture and balanced tannin very much in the style of classic Southern Rhone wines.

The Oxford Wine Company are currently stocking BN’s 100% Mouverdre, a grape rarely seen as a single varietal. A deep wine with big flavours of blackberry, black truffle, chocolate and toasted almond, a rich and full palate brought together by some of the wine spending time in new Hungarian oak.

An excellent addition to the Californian wine scene, Benevolent Neglect are quickly making a name for themselves.
