The new academic year has started exceptionally well at OWC, with a month-long celebration of Bordeaux reflected in our tasting programme.

Walkaround Tasting: Discover Bordeaux

Saturday 5^th September saw almost 60 guests join us for our Discover Bordeaux walkaround tastings across three sessions. Highlights included a magnum of Chateau Malmaison 2016, four Bordeaux Blancs that proved a surprise hit with many guests and wines such as OCHA showcasing a more modern, delicate style of Bordeaux.

Masterclass: Wines of North Canterbury with Mt Beautiful’s Robert Watkins

When the opportunity arose, we were also excited to welcome Robert Watkins of New Zealand producer Mt Beautiful to Oxford on 17^th September. Robert presented a wonderful masterclass showcasing five wines from Mt Beautiful to a packed-out Turl Street Cellar. The following afternoon, he toured our shops and bars to meet the team, taste through the wines together and share more about what Mt Beautiful are doing differently in North Canterbury.

Château Angludet: Masterclass with Charles Sichel

Our Bordeaux month concluded with another visit from overseas, this time from Charles Sichel. Charles presented a selection from Maison Sichel’s portfolio to staff over the course of the afternoon, before showcasing six vintages from the family’s home estate, Château Angludet, to customers and university representatives that evening in Jericho. Charles’ expertise and warmth shone through, and the wines were showing incredibly well, with the 2015 and 2010 proving firm favourites among many.

Amidst all of this, we hosted two bespoke tastings for private groups and benefited hugely from a dedicated Bordeaux training session for staff. Three members of the OWC team also represented The Oxford Wine School at The Oxford Wine Festival. Featuring two sell-out tutored tastings and eleven wines on our stand, it was a busy three sessions talking all things wine education. We are delighted to see so many have signed up to attend our WSET Levels 1 and 2 courses and look forward to welcoming them over the coming months!
