What We’re Drinking in February

Ted Sandbach, Owner & Chairman
Domaine du Petit Clocher Chardonnay, Anjou 2023– £14.50 £13.05 – An old favourite of mine . The early release of the 2023 vintage was not well received. It seems too light and floral and lacked the depth of richness of previous vintages. However happy to report that it is now drinking really well again having had a chance to calm down. No oak here – just fruit.
Domaine Clavel Cordelia Chusclan Côtes du Rhône Villages 2021 – £13.75 £12.38 – Terrific wine from the talented Claire Clavel, who we have been delighted to welcome to our shops more than once. Expect rich dark flavours with herb and spice overtones.
Domaine d’Ardhuy Aloxe-Corton Les Bouttieres 2022 – £50.00 £45.00 –While I often bemoan the price of Burgundy, it is sometimes just the ticket for an occasional treat. This Aloxe Corton is elegant, intense and complex.

Neil Gladding, Sales Director

Guasti Moscato d’Asti 2023 – £14.50 £13.05 – At only 5% ABV, this is a wine that works wonderfully over a light lunch.

John Shuckburgh, WSET Educator
Guido Porro Barolo DOCG Vigna Santa Caterina 2020 – £55.00 £49.50 – Stunningly powerful and intense flavours of plums and cherries, with a perfumed nose of violets and dried herbs.Young yet, and still tannic, so decant first. This will mature into a fine and muscular Barolo.
Pazos de Lusco Albariño Lusco, Rias Baixas 2023 – £18.00 £16.20 – A super example of Spain’s favourite white. Lemons and peaches mingle with freshly baked pastry in a textured palate. Elegant and satisfyingly long. Delicious.
1792 Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey– £51.00 £45.90 – Toffee popcorn and spices warm and caress the palate when first tasted. A long finish leaves sweet vanilla and a touch of paprika. A sophisticated whiskey to savour over time.

Manda Joyce, Wine Advisor
Native Cuvée Speciale Sauvignon Blanc, Côtes de Gascogne 2023 – £11.75 £10.58 – I re-tasted this recently and was again impressed with the quality. Made specially for us and poised nicely between new- and old-world styles – aromatic, fresh and peachy.
The Bitter Truth Bitters- Orange 20cl – £18.00 £16.20 – I’m a big fan of bitters in cocktails, in cooking and with tonic water. Try this one for a really bitter orange bitters.
Botivo Zero Alcohol Aperitif 50cl – £26.95 £24.26 – This botanical aperitif based on apple cider vinegar is a grown-up non-alcoholic option. Zhuzz up sparkling water with Botivo, ice and a big slice of orange.

Cynar Artichoke Liqueur – £23.00 £20.70 – I was fascinated by the idea of this artichoke-based liqueur for a while before tasting it, and I’m not sure if I was disappointed or not that it doesn’t actually taste anything like artichokes! I enjoy it in a spritz with prosecco, soda and a slice of lemon.
