Organic and Biodynamic Wine

At The Oxford Wine Company we stock a number of certified Organic and Biodynamic wines. See below for details of what makes a wine organic or biodynamic. While some organic and biodynamic wines are also vegetarian or vegan, this is not necessarily the case. You can find vegan wine here and vegetarian wine here.

Organic Wine

For a wine to be officially organic, it must be made using grapes farmed organically, and using organic practices in the winery. It must also be accredited by a recognised certification body, which means that both vineyard and winery will be inspected to ensure adherence to the rules.

Organic viticulture is focused on building health in both the soil and the vine. Agrochemicals must not be used in the vineyard (and should not be for three full years prior to certification).

In the winery, there are limits to the additives or processing aids which can be used. The legal limits on sulphur dioxide for organic wine are lower than those for conventional wines.

Biodynamic Wine

Biodynamic wine is produced according to a philosophy based on treating the vineyard as one complete circular ecosystem. As with organic viticulture, all artificial products are banned. Biodynamic viticulturalists must use specific preparations on their vineyard, all made from natural ingredients and aimed at building health and life in the soil. Vineyard and winery work takes place in line with the phases of the moon, and use of sulphur dioxide and other winery additives is minimal.

Sustainable Wine

We have chosen to label some of our wines as ‘sustainable’. This is used for wineries which are practicing organically but not certified. It is also used for those wineries who are officially accredited by a national organisation such as Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand or Sustainable Wine South Africa.
